Playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution is kind of like being thrown into the world of Blade Runner, only spotting the robots is much easier. Alright, robot wasn’t fair; there is a lot cybernetic prosthetics or augmentations though. This prequel takes place about 25 years before the events of Deus Ex. Although I did not play the previous installments I had no problems getting into the story and feeling immersed. Along with an interesting setting this game flawlessly merges FPS and RPG elements and character progression for an experience definitely worth a toke.
You are Adam Jensen, the guy who never asked for this. Former SWAT and now working security for a big time corporation that pioneers in the human augmentation front. After a tragedy Adam gets rebuilt and has access to all sorts of cool and stylish toys. With gear that puts the 6 Million Dollar Man to shame, Adam continues the security gig and gets caught up in complex corporate espionage plots and plenty of side quests featuring all kinds of adult themes. Plenty of traveling happens too, starting off in a future Detroit with new major industry, to a small jump away to Canada and also all the way across the Pacific to China.
Throughout the game you have a choice to make, how to react to a conversation, how to take down those muscle head goons with the big guns. There are many ways to build your Adam, being a stealth ninja that doesn’t kill while crawling through heating ducts is an option. Jumping off a five story building and killing the suckers beneath you, a smooth talker that uses pheromones to get what you want; there are many, many options that are compatible to any play style. There are tons of guns as well, ranging from non-lethal shock guns to sniper rifles, and many guns can be modified too.
Eidos Montreal has done something incredible. Bringing to life a vision of the future this astounding and beautiful and frighteningly plausible is no small accomplishment. The few gripes I have with the game is some artistic directions and level designs (I got lost waaay too many times), nothing major but it keeps this game from achieving a score of 1 ounce. With the proper preparation and mindset you can lose hours and hours taking on the role of Adam Jensen, augmented badass. Allowing us to take that role, I award this game a score of…
7/8th!!
