It’s no secret that Skyrim is getting raving reviews all over the place. To save some time I won’t tell you how beautiful the Skyrim mountain peaks are, the frigid ocean, the waterfalls. I won’t mention the wilderness teeming with life ripe for the hunt, the surprised encounters or random dragon battles. I won’t talk about the complex politics you can participate in or the flower picking and butterfly chasing you can do. No need too, you’ve probably already have heard about it or done it. I want to talk about the potential of this latest installment of this new chapter of The Elder Scrolls series.
If you’re a console player I’m afraid this article won’t be very relevant to you. With the ability to use mods with Skyrim, there is potentially limitless content, even more than the limitless content Bethesda promised with their radiant AI system. On day 1 of release there were player made textures (even nude skins, teehee) and other modifications to the game that only made the game more enjoyable. Bethy is even embracing the modding community as well, working with steam to create a marketplace for player mods. I’m going to drop a hint to the readers, we Game Tokers are working on our own mod, planned to release shortly after the Creation Kit goes live, but for now you’ll have to live with my wish list for modders out there.

  • Higher Difficulty
  • Underwater Content
  • Settlement Management
  • Dragon Mount
  • Modifying Animations & Models

I didn’t think I was too advanced into the game when I bumped up my difficulty to Master, the highest setting. This seems to be a common problem to players, at a certain point the combat isn’t challenging. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy being a badass sometimes, but when a dragon swoops down my reaction should be fear/adrenaline, not annoyance with a follow up five second fight.
My biggest gripe with the game is no underwater combat. The messed up part is there are fish that attack you. My only recourse is to lure them near the shore and swing my axe wildly at the water; I can only image what a random passerby might think. I want a remedy to this problem; I also want more things to do underwater. Maybe a shipwreck that doesn’t look that wrecked at all, setting off a quest to find the mysterious origins of this “wreck.”
As the Dragonborn you can influence the balance of powers at play in Skyrim. Help the Nords reclaim Skyrim, or squash the crazy zealots. Again, as Dragonborn you should be able to come to power in a region and claim the throne of a Jarl, either through guile or with force. It may sound boring to some, but I would love to influence the economy of a town with a wave of my hand, weigh in on a case only fit for the Jarl, to administer justice to the local pickpocket, all with a crown on my head.
Incoming Transmission/Spaceman-spoiler alert-. . . For those of you who have finished the main quest line you have experienced first hand how fun it was riding that dragon the first time. Now imagine a shout that calls a dragon to your aide, except this time it does not fight at your side. It lands next to you and you proceed to climb upon his neck and fly him around Skyrim. This or some form of mod similar to this will most surely be created within the first couple weeks after the release of the Creation Kit. The animations are already there so its a pretty cake mod in theory. Eventually you could start seeing saddles from the horses adjusted and mounted on the dragons. Soon you will be soaring through the cold mountain air breathing fiery doom on an encampment of bandits or fight shout-to-shout with a dragon high above Whiterun. Riding a fire breathing dragon into combat sounds like the right way to Dragonborn to me.

The eagerly awaited creation kit will also allow for the editing of animations and models. This could lead to such a vast amount of customization and player made content that people could theoretically begin to make their own expansions similar to the custom maps in Starcraft I & II. Imagine being able to play Morrowind again with all the graphics and combat of Skyrim. For more info check this out. As the months pass after the release of the creation kit one might ask, where does it end? How long before a player made "mod" is created and set in Elsweyr, or dare I say it the whole world of Tamriel? There is already a mod in oblivion that takes place in Elsweyr, and if you take the time to learn some console commands you can explore outside of Skyrim. How much is really out there already created by Bethesda just waiting to be created by fans, only the future will tell.
