Mass Effect Multiplayer: Lets Save the Galaxy Together!

A chill ran down my spine when I heard there was going to be multiplayer in Mass Effect 3. After losing too many hours to the demo I am anxious to announce that the multiplayer is the best decision Bioware could have made. It feels and plays like the single player campaign, minus the power wheel, plus you can be an ALIEN! How the game works is pretty much the horde mode from Gears of War, so it felt familiar. All the classes are available and with the purchase of “booster packs” that you buy from the store with credits you are given for playing. In these “booster packs” are all sorts of things, ranging from character customization to new race/class combos to new weapons and ammo.

There are three difficulty levels; bronze, silver, and gold. While playing bronze I felt invincible, so I tried a silver match, and I had a big ol' piece of humble pie. Not going to lie, I do have some problems with it as is. I haven’t figured out how to change the key bindings for your powers and the controls are a little clunky, but nothing out of the norm with the Mass Effect series. I also would have like a few more polygons and higher res textures, but it has been said that there will be higher res options for the textures come release for PC players.

Assasins Creed: Revelations or Questions?

The game play is about the same as previous installments, though there have been a few additions like the hookblade; it’s a nice touch as it adds some style and combat variation. But it doesn’t feel necessary, it’s mainly there to add a few inches when you jump but I’ve never had a problem; I can always hit a ledge without its help, and you can climb anything without it, it’s mostly a convenience. The bomb crafting is nice and the use is even more fun, the variation for wide gameplay is great; you can kill, distract, or the always entertaining just fucking with people. A small annoyance is the finishing kill, some of them feel drawn out in a "Look what I can still do at 50!" kind of fashion, nice to watch but overdone. Other than those, the climbing and acrobatics is still spectacular, though inebriated humorous and difficult. The combat is fun to watch and the variations to assassinate and escape will always entertain. There is a tower defense mini-game that is fun but if you want to do it again you have to fuck up people’s days and piss off the Templars to where they will attack a den. There are still the store renovations, the brotherhood missions, assisted assassinations, and territorial conquest is familiar, just tailored to an older Ezio.

Multiplayer is still unique. The addition of the chance to learn more about the Templars and their history is a good drive. On top of leveling, the multiplayer you really need to have a knack for it, you need style not just bloodlust. The main pull of having to out NPC people and sneak up on the un-suspecting is the most satisfying of kills. You feel like you earned for it instead of blind-firing around a corner like other modern games of a different genre. While “performance enhancers” are in use it’s immensely difficult to distinguish faces in the crowds and notice subtle movements. Keep in mind that like in any multiplayer game there are douchebags who are out to prove that their internet “ego” is bigger than everyone else's and ruin the game by just running around and assassinating people or just standing on buildings flying from rooftops to assassinate or make it impossible to catch, granted they always lose because they are going for quantity over quality of kills, which is how the point system works. They just make it difficult to enjoy the core aspects the game.

The graphics are up to date, the soft textures are nicely done but that was a technique perfected long ago by Ubisoft with Splinter Cell. The environments, although rather brown and grey, still have a sense of life to them, like when your back is turned you know the daily life of Constantinople is still happening.

Finally some answers and still there are more questions! I knew going into this that this is not the last in the series, the continuation of the 2012 Doomsday Theory is finally confirmed and I’m sure they're going to release the next game mid to late 2012. I hope that Desmond will not be getting his own game; he is just not an interesting character despite the ability to travel and view his own memories about how he got to where he is, an interesting approach to a puzzle game. The Ezio campaign is fun but nothing new. The switch from renaissance art to ancient literature for storytelling assistance is a nice change of pace and a very useful way to educate the audience, and might encourage them to educate themselves in many aspects of the game from the fall of the Byzantines and the rise of the Ottomans, to ancient literature, and key players of the time. The story itself is fun you must get five keys to open the library of Altair to find the grand temple, each key holds a memory of Altair, to teach a lesson of what the assassin guild stands for. The memories I enjoy because it brings closure to an interesting character that I felt was left hangout to dry, and was only briefly mentioned in the previous game.

I give it a total of 6.5/8

It’s no secret that Skyrim is getting raving reviews all over the place. To save some time I won’t tell you how beautiful the Skyrim mountain peaks are, the frigid ocean, the waterfalls. I won’t mention the wilderness teeming with life ripe for the hunt, the surprised encounters or random dragon battles. I won’t talk about the complex politics you can participate in or the flower picking and butterfly chasing you can do. No need too, you’ve probably already have heard about it or done it. I want to talk about the potential of this latest installment of this new chapter of The Elder Scrolls series.

Well you guessed it my imaginary readers, Mesmer will be the eighth and final class! Big surprise right? Pretty clever of them to bring back their most iconic class from guild wars 1, impressive. however, this info was leaked to the public before Arena.net had a chance to say, "Gotcha! It was the Mesmer the whole time! Tehe." A whole video was discovered showing some of the skills that come with being a Mesmer. To Arena.nets credit they didn't try and hide the video or track it down and punish whoever posted it they just admitted what it was and said ,"Oops."

Now if you haven't heard of guild wars before allow me to lay it down for you. Guild wars 2, like its predecessor, will be free to play and very casual friendly. The fine people over at Arena.net have created a game where you can play on any server in any number of guilds with any of your friends for free. No longer will you have to create an alt to play with your friend on a different server, no longer will you have to leave your favorite guild to join that hardcore PVP guild.
Now you can have both with only one payment of the usual $59.99 price tag. But enough about that. Here is the Mesmer.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Finally! [PC]

Playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution is kind of like being thrown into the world of Blade Runner, only spotting the robots is much easier. Alright, robot wasn’t fair; there is a lot cybernetic prosthetics or augmentations though. This prequel takes place about 25 years before the events of Deus Ex. Although I did not play the previous installments I had no problems getting into the story and feeling immersed. Along with an interesting setting this game flawlessly merges FPS and RPG elements and character progression for an experience definitely worth a toke.

You are Adam Jensen, the guy who never asked for this. Former SWAT and now working security for a big time corporation that pioneers in the human augmentation front. After a tragedy Adam gets rebuilt and has access to all sorts of cool and stylish toys. With gear that puts the 6 Million Dollar Man to shame, Adam continues the security gig and gets caught up in complex corporate espionage plots and plenty of side quests featuring all kinds of adult themes. Plenty of traveling happens too, starting off in a future Detroit with new major industry, to a small jump away to Canada and also all the way across the Pacific to China.

Throughout the game you have a choice to make, how to react to a conversation, how to take down those muscle head goons with the big guns. There are many ways to build your Adam, being a stealth ninja that doesn’t kill while crawling through heating ducts is an option. Jumping off a five story building and killing the suckers beneath you, a smooth talker that uses pheromones to get what you want; there are many, many options that are compatible to any play style. There are tons of guns as well, ranging from non-lethal shock guns to sniper rifles, and many guns can be modified too.

Eidos Montreal has done something incredible. Bringing to life a vision of the future this astounding and beautiful and frighteningly plausible is no small accomplishment. The few gripes I have with the game is some artistic directions and level designs (I got lost waaay too many times), nothing major but it keeps this game from achieving a score of 1 ounce. With the proper preparation and mindset you can lose hours and hours taking on the role of Adam Jensen, augmented badass. Allowing us to take that role, I award this game a score of…

7/8th!!

Batman: Arkham City - Hemp Knight Rising [PS3]

The best way to fight crime is to punch it right in its teeth. The Bat is back in black to get to the bottom of Arkham City and to see how and why it was constructed. This is how you make a sequel to one of the best comic book games in history. Updated and improved fight mechanics, more ninja tools and high tech gadgets, you are seriously the goddamn Batman in this game. Just when I didn’t think it was possible they managed to stuff even MORE characters from the Batmythos into the game and still managed to make a coherent, airtight storyline.

Trying to not spoil anything, the Batman goes to foil the plans Harvey Dent (Two-Face) has to horrendously murder Bat’s on-and-off fling, Selina Kyle (Catwoman). Shortly after that that you get sidetracked from your main goal, the mastermind behind Arkham City, Hugo Strange, to go after The Joker. To make a long story short, The Joker infects you with something and you have to go around the cordoned section of Gotham City to find a cure, running into all sorts of denizens of the Batman’s rogue’s gallery along the way.

If you thought the brawling mechanics in Arkham Asylum were brilliant, these are fucking genius. More quick gadgets to use to make amazing combos, the ability to counter multiple enemies at once, more special moves to use after you’ve built up enough combo multipliers, just amazing. The predator aspect got some more toys too, with hanging ledge takedowns and speeding glide kick to name a few. The Riddler is up to his old schemes again, hiding his trophies around the city, but now with puzzles that had me kicking myself in the ass once I figured it out. One complaint I had about Arkham Asylum was the uninspired boss fights, luckily this issue was addressed in the sequel and they are nothing short of awesome! The Mr. Freeze fight was easily my favorite and most difficult to conquer.

I’m not sure if it’s my love for the caped crusader, but I can’t find any flaws in this game no matter how hard I try. There is some WTF!!?! Moments in the story, but I believe it’s all to set up for the third installation of this series and hopefully they will be answered...though I’m not sure where they can take the series after this, maybe space? Rocksteady is planning on dropping some DLC in November, so even more content to keep me content. This Dark Knight has received the score of…

8/8 or 1 OUNCE!!

L.A. Noire, Finally [PS3]

Ever think you would make a good detective? LA Noire takes the Grad Theft Auto sandbox experience and puts you on the other side of the conflict as Cole Phelps; former marine, current detective and ass kicker. Team Bondi utilizes the Havok Engine as well as an in-house one to create the fantastic facial animations throughout the game. The setting is immersive; cruising down Main St. in 1940’s Los Angeles with sirens blaring at top speeds gives me quite the “thrill.” Grab your smokes and hat; we’ve got a case to crack!

The Game Toker takes on the role of Cole Phelps, a boy in blue trying to make a name for himself on the force, while struggling with a family and dealing with a seemingly haunting past from World War II. After solving a case you are promoted to Detective! As a Detective you are assigned a partner, a car and a hat. With your snazzy as fuck fedora, you get to rub shoulders with movie star...wannabes and get to interrogate little girls who may have been raped, not much has changed with cops I guess. You will be working your way to different desks starting with traffic. I will be honest right now, I did not finish the game, I just couldn’t stay interested. I made it to the Vice Desk and put down the controller soon after.

LA Noire’s game play is kind of bland in this reviewer’s opinion. Lacking the freestyle of raising hell and gunning down civvies hurt the enjoyment for me. Without the openness of actions like in other sandboxes the game boils down to: asking questions, running after a suspect, walking around looking for clues. On the flipside, questioning and interrogating people in this game is amazing I have to say, the facial animations are unparalleled, though it gets repetitive and easy once you can point out the tells of the unlucky individual across from you. The saving grace here is I have high hopes *snicker* that the face engine will be used in the next GTA installment (you know there will be another one.)

I might just be me, but I can only seem to enjoy a detective experience when a cape and cowl are involved. LA Noire lacked in gunplay and action, should have had a bit more to keep that genre exciting. Team Bondi has set the bar with face animations and storytelling with LA Noire, too bad the story couldn’t hold my attention. LA Noire is a good game by all means, but not one that catered to my tastes, I will have to give this classy title…
