What happens when Call of Duty and its weapon customization, Team Fortress 2 and its class warfare, and Mirror’s Edge and its PARKOUR have a drunk-fueled orgy lovechild? Bethesda supplied the booze for that threesome to happen and cooked up Brink! This competitive shooter brings interesting depth to the genre, though it seems kind of like a TF2 mod to me. Two teams with very different aesthetics, 4 different classes, 3 body types for your character, and some of the best customization I’ve seen for a shooter like this. Can’t forget about the classic post-apocalyptic setting too!
The team based objectives are fun and varied; every class has a role and should work together. Operatives are the sneaky guys that can disguise themselves and hack into things. Medics are cool, they do the healing thing and raise people, can even raise the NPC during escort quests. Soldiers can resupply ammo for themselves and others (sharing is caring) and also set up explosives. Engineers are fun with their turrets and mines and other goodies. You also have 3 different body types; light, medium and heavy, getting more health as you go bigger, but give up some awesome parkour skills in exchange. The gun selection is pretty cool; with the bigger guns belonging to the bigger guys it gives an interesting balance.
Brink certainly does try to stuff all these mechanics into one game, and for the most part it works out well. The game does feel a little rushed, with its day one patch and a few more after that it’s clear Splash Damage felt the same way. Apparently there is some DLC coming out in June…for FREE! So that’s a plus. There is a bit of a learning curve when under the influence, but that can be said for any new endeavor. It has been a while since a game has had my adrenaline pumping like it does, and for this I have to give Brink….
